From 1 July 2026, employers will be required to pay superannuation at the same time as wages, replacing the current quarterly payment system.
Known as Payday Super, the change will affect how businesses manage payroll, cash flow and super compliance.
While the amount of super you pay won’t change, the timing will. For many businesses, this will have a direct impact on cash flow and payroll processes.
The good news? A little preparation now can make the transition much smoother.
What is changing?
Under the current rules, employers can make Superannuation Guarantee (SG) payments quarterly, provided they meet the quarterly due dates.
From 1 July 2026, super contributions will generally need to be paid much closer to each pay run, making super a regular part of your payroll process rather than a quarterly obligation.
How can your business prepare?
1. Review your cash flow
The biggest impact of Payday Super for many businesses will be the timing of payments.
Funds that may previously have remained in your business until quarterly super due dates will need to be available much sooner.
Reviewing your cash flow now can help identify any pressure points and give you time to plan ahead.
2. Check your systems and setup
With super payments becoming more frequent, having the right systems in place will be essential.
Now is a good time to review:
- Your payroll software setup
- Employee super fund details
- Super payment processes
- Clearing house registration and access
Businesses using Xero are well placed to manage the transition, provided their payroll and super settings are configured correctly.
Get ready before the deadline
The businesses that are likely to have the smoothest transition are those that start preparing before the changes take effect.
Taking the time to review your processes now can help avoid last-minute administration issues and reduce the risk of missed or delayed payments.
